Every week The Super Supper Club works in collaboration with Baggator to prepare meals using supermarket food that would otherwise be thrown away to make home-cooked meals and food boxes for those in need who have been affected by COVID-19. The latest Bristol Bites Back Better blog post is by Baggator’s Anya Agulova, celebrating the hard work of volunteers to get a new catering oven. Funds and/or food donations from individuals and local businesses are gratefully received for the project.

When we launched the Bristol Bites Back Better campaign in November, we wanted to get the conversation going and hear from the people of Bristol. We asked two simple questions, and got a wide range of answers so far, giving us insight into what Bristol citizens want to see happening in our city, and who deserves celebration. FoodCycle Bristol volunteer Ed Oswald writes the latest Bristol Bites Back Better blog about how the organisation have had to adapt their work in this unprecedented year, and how they are using surplus food to feed up to 100 Bristolians each week. This Christmas Food Cycle ask that we all consider what surplus food we might be able to donate, whether to charities or by using an app like OLIO, or to help out as a volunteer.

Anna Blightman from The Assemblies reports on the latest Bristol food businesses sector webinar hosted by Deputy Mayor Cllr Asher Craig, chair of the Bristol Going for Gold steering group. The event updated those working in the food sector about the latest economic developments in Bristol, advised on working in a COVID-secure environment and explained more about the Bristol Eating Better Award.

The Children’s Kitchen, a Feeding Bristol project working with partners 91 Ways and Square Food Foundation, have produced a series of recipes and cookery videos to inspire children to cook at home. The videos feature Bristol cooks and their children from 91 Ways, Square Food Foundation and KnowleDGE. There is also a costed shopping list for buying ingredients on the £15 budget and links to useful websites and support around food.

During the lockdown, Barton Hill Settlement’s The Network partnered with local storyteller, Polly Tisdall, to create a new podcast to celebrate Bristol’s communities. The podcast, Held In Common, shared unexpected positives that people had noticed during the virus outbreak with food very much at the heart of many of the stories. Writer and academic Bernie Munoz participated in the project and contributes to our latest blog post.

Director of The Children’s Kitchen, Jo Ingleby, considers the importance of being able to cook a meal from scratch with simple, fresh, affordable ingredients. The significance of this essential skill has been highlighted during the COVID-19 crisis, as dealing with shortages of certain ingredients is – of course – far less stressful when we know how to easily adapt meals.

Earlier this month Negat Hussain, community cook and Refugee Women of Bristol outreach worker, hosted a #BristolFoodKind webinar giving practical tips about cooking from scratch. Negat’s webinar was all about giving people the confidence to try something new and not to worry about making mistakes.
