It may not seem like an obvious thing to do in the office, but workplace growing projects can bring both physical and mental health benefits to staff.
Such projects can be self-contained—run entirely for the benefit of the organisation involved—or they can help link a company with the community. By providing new shared green space, workplace community growing bridges the corporate and community worlds, and boosts biodiversity across the city. Workplace growing sites can also help facilitate a skills exchange between those with much or little experience of gardening, and provide a healthy way to spend a lunch break.
Organisations have the power to boost the city’s commercial urban growing sector through their purchasing choices, and by helping reduce the barriers for staff to buy more locally grown produce.
There’s so much your organisation can do to make urban growing part of workplace life. The power you have as an individual to make change in your place of work or learning will depend on many things, including your role, the size and structure of the organisation. But no matter what our role, we all have the power to start a conversation or raise a question. In many cases, this is all it takes to start a revolution.
